Baby Steps

I signed up for this site called "Nerd Fitness Academy". It's set up to make eating healthy and getting fit a game. As in quests. I signed up even though I knew I wouldn't start for awhile. My team was about to head to Vegas and I was having surgery soon after. Eating and exercise plans, especially ones not established, would go out the window anyway and why set myself up to feel guilty about it?Feeling guilty is a sure way to fail.

I've been slowly working towards goals to get me started despite those non-starter reasons. Pre-gaming, if you will. ;-)

Takeout/delivery meals are my go to for sustenance. I like to cook but hate cooking for one. I also just get lazy about it and don't want to do it when I get home. (Which to be fair, is sometimes quite late.) One of my steps is to cook more at home. I figured being home for surgery recovery would be a good time to work on that. And it was to some degree. Initially, I wasn't hungry so I wasn't eating anyway. And I did slowly start doing more at home eating. Somewhat relying on convenience foods, but still... not eating out!

And as I get closer to being fully recovered physically, I'm still taking baby steps in the right direction. I know if I go all in all at once I'll burn out on it. Tonight's dinner? Kalua Roast Pork I made on Sunday and roasted brussels sprouts, followed by some berries with a little coconut milk on top.
wink emoticon That was originally supposed to be whipped cream made from the coconut milk but it didn't separate properly and when I tried to whip it anyway it just made a mess. I mixed that in with some berries for a smoothie in the morning.

And this despite the fact that I was tired (a common excuse) and home later (another one) and that we had an event that day that made me want something really quick (as I didn't have much to eat during the day, yet another common excuse!). So, I did have some food fails (hello donut and bagel) but all in all I'm happy with how the day ended!
Note: In this quest for healthier eating habits I'm aiming to eat mostly primal. Meats, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds and dairy. I can't give up dairy! This path originated in my feeling that eating too many processed foods was an underlying factor in some health issues I was having. While I'm not sure grains are as evil as they are made out to be by the major pushers of this style of eating, I also don't see the harm in eating... food and it's food closer to it's more natural state, which I think will give me more of the nutrients it provides.
